    FAQ About Kids’ Dentistry

Here are some of the most common questions we get regarding the oral health of children. If you have a question that isn’t listed here please let us know and we’ll be happy to help!

When should a child have their first visit to the dentist?

We like to see how a child’s teeth are doing at about six months to one year old, usually right about the time when their first tooth begins to show.

At this stage in their development it’s more about educating you on what to do or not do while your kids get used to the dental care environment. We simply check their teeth and give them a little polish!

Why do we need to provide care for baby teeth, which aren’t permanent?

Although they don’t last as long as permanent teeth, your child’s first teeth play an important role in his or her development. While they’re in place, these primary teeth help your little one speak, smile, and chew properly.

They also hold space in the jaw for permanent teeth. If a child loses a tooth too early (due to damage or decay) nearby teeth may encroach on that space, which can result in crooked or misplaced permanent adult teeth.

What are some of the most common dental problems in dids?

When a child’s permanent teeth come in it is important to stop (or minimize) the habit of thumbsucking as this may cause problems like misaligned teeth. It is also possible for thumbsucking to alter the roof of your child’s mouth.

Also, if your child has a bottle with them overnight it is very important to fill it with water and nothing else, as juice or milk can contribute to tooth decay.

How should I prepare my child for their first visit?

Kids naturally take their cue from you. The best thing you can do to get your child ready for their first visit to the dentist is to maintain a positive attitude. If you’re saying negative things, or displaying apprehension about dental visits, they may fear an unpleasant experience and resist the appointment.

We find it helpful if you can show your child pictures of the dental office and our team on our website! Let them know that we are here to help them succeed in life by teaching them how to take care of something very important: their teeth.

Our team members know to make your child feel at ease during their first few visits.

Dos and don’ts for kids’ dental health

We’ve got some great advice to help you and your children have a healthy, lifelong smile.

    Dos:

    1. Regular checkups.
    2. Daily brushing and flossing (at least twice per day).
    3. Check your child’s teeth for white or brown spots at least once per month.
    4. Begin brushing your baby’s teeth when they first come in.
    5. Take your baby to the dentist at one year old.

    Don’ts:

    1. Don’t eat sugar or drink pop without brushing afterwards.
    2. Don’t use teeth as a tool.
    3. Don’t wiggle or pull on a loose tooth (visit your dentist right away!).
