Our Approach to Kids & Teens Dentistry

Creating Positive Dental Experiences

Dental anxiety often starts in childhood—but it doesn't have to. Our philosophy centers on making every visit positive, building trust through gentle care, clear communication, and genuine connection with each young patient.

For young children, we use age-appropriate language and the "show-tell-do" technique: we show them our tools, explain what we'll do in simple terms, then proceed gently. For teenagers, we provide detailed explanations, respect their growing autonomy, and involve them in treatment decisions.

The result? Children who grow into adults with healthy teeth and no fear of the dentist.

A Welcoming Environment

Our Holland Cross office is designed with families in mind. From the moment you walk in, young patients feel welcome and at ease. Our team genuinely enjoys working with children and teens, and that warmth shows in every interaction.

Dental Care by Age Group

Infants and Toddlers (0-3 Years)

First Visit: We recommend bringing your baby for their first dental visit within six months of the first tooth appearing, or by their first birthday. These "well-baby" visits are brief and gentle—we'll examine your child's mouth, discuss proper cleaning techniques, and answer your questions about teething, thumb-sucking, and nutrition.

Establishing Habits: Early visits help children become comfortable with the dental environment before any treatment is needed. We also provide guidance on:

  • Proper tooth brushing techniques for baby teeth
  • When and how to wean from bottles and pacifiers
  • Preventing early childhood cavities (baby bottle tooth decay)
  • Teething comfort strategies

Preschool and Early Elementary (3-6 Years)

Growing Smiles: These years are crucial for establishing lifelong oral health habits. Most children have all 20 baby teeth by age 3, and around age 6, the first permanent molars begin appearing behind the baby teeth.

What We Provide:

  • Gentle dental cleanings and exams
  • Fluoride treatments for cavity prevention
  • Early orthodontic monitoring
  • Guidance on brushing and flossing techniques
  • Discussion of nutrition and limiting sugary snacks

Dental Sealants: When first molars erupt around age 6, we often recommend dental sealants. These protective coatings on the chewing surfaces of molars can reduce cavity risk by up to 80%—a simple, painless procedure that takes just minutes.

School-Age Children (6-12 Years)

The Mixed Dentition Years: Between ages 6-12, children have a combination of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This is an exciting time of change—and an important time for dental monitoring.

Key Services:

  • Professional cleanings every six months
  • X-rays to monitor developing permanent teeth
  • Cavity treatment (fillings) if needed
  • Sports mouthguards for young athletes
  • Orthodontic evaluation (typically around age 7)
  • Continued sealant application on new molars

Building Independence: By age 10-12, most children can brush and floss independently. We teach proper techniques and help kids take pride in caring for their own smiles.

Teenagers (13-18 Years)

Unique Challenges: Teen years bring new dental considerations—wisdom teeth development, increased cavity and gum disease risk (often due to dietary and hygiene changes), and cosmetic concerns about their smiles.

Comprehensive Teen Services:

  • Professional cleanings and thorough exams
  • Wisdom teeth monitoring and extraction when needed
  • Orthodontic care (Invisalign; referrals for traditional braces)
  • Treatment for cavities and gum issues
  • Sports mouthguards for athletes
  • Education on the dental effects of smoking, vaping, and piercings

Invisalign for Teens: Many teenagers prefer Invisalign clear aligners over traditional braces. Invisalign Teen includes compliance indicators so parents can confirm aligners are being worn properly and replacement aligners for those inevitable losses.

Wisdom Teeth: We begin monitoring wisdom tooth development around ages 14-16. If extraction is recommended, the ideal time is often ages 16-19, when roots aren't fully formed and recovery is typically faster.

Preventive Dental Services for Kids & Teens

Dental Exams and Cleanings

Regular six-month visits are the foundation of pediatric dental health. During each visit, we:

  • Clean teeth thoroughly, removing plaque and tartar
  • Examine for cavities, gum issues, and developmental concerns
  • Take X-rays when indicated to monitor developing teeth
  • Apply fluoride treatments for added protection
  • Review home care techniques and provide age-appropriate guidance

Fluoride Treatments

Professional fluoride treatments strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent cavities. These quick, painless applications are especially beneficial for children and teens who are at higher cavity risk.

Dental Sealants

Sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the grooved chewing surfaces of back teeth—where most cavities in children develop. We typically apply sealants when permanent molars first erupt (around ages 6 and 12) for maximum protection during cavity-prone years.

Oral Hygiene Education

We teach children and teens proper brushing and flossing techniques appropriate for their age and ability. For younger children, we involve parents in demonstrations. For teens, we discuss the connection between oral health and overall health, including the impact of diet, tobacco, and other lifestyle factors.

Treating Dental Issues in Children & Teens

Cavities and Fillings

Despite our best preventive efforts, some children develop cavities. We treat childhood cavities with gentle techniques and tooth-colored fillings that blend naturally with young smiles.

Early Treatment Matters: Treating cavities in baby teeth is important even though these teeth will eventually fall out. Untreated decay can spread, cause pain, lead to infection, and affect permanent teeth developing beneath.

Emergency Dental Care

Active kids sometimes have dental accidents—chipped teeth, knocked-out teeth, or dental injuries from sports or play. Our Holland Cross practice provides prompt emergency care for young patients. If your child experiences a dental emergency, call us immediately at (613) 728-1511.

Common Childhood Dental Emergencies:

  • Knocked-out tooth (keep it moist, call immediately)
  • Chipped or broken tooth
  • Severe toothache
  • Object stuck between teeth
  • Bitten lip or tongue with significant bleeding

Orthodontic Referrals and Invisalign

We monitor jaw growth and tooth alignment starting at age 7, as recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists. Early detection of orthodontic issues allows for timely intervention, which can simplify later treatment or prevent problems from worsening.

Dental Anxiety Management

Some children and teens experience significant dental anxiety. Our approach includes:

  • Patient, understanding care at your child's pace
  • Clear explanations and the power of choice when possible
  • Distraction techniques and comfort items
  • Sedation dentistry options when needed (nitrous oxide, oral sedation)
  • Referral to pediatric dental specialists for severe anxiety if appropriate

Helping Children Overcome Dental Fear

For Young Children

Positive Preparation: Read children's books about dental visits (we can recommend titles!). Play "dentist" at home, counting stuffed animals' teeth. Keep your language positive—avoid words like "hurt," "shot," or "drill."

Comfort Items: Bring your child's favorite toy or blanket. Familiar items provide security in new situations.

Parental Calm: Children pick up on parental anxiety. Stay calm, positive, and confident—even if you have your own dental fears.

Praise and Rewards: Celebrate successful dental visits! Positive reinforcement builds good associations.

For Anxious Teens

Respect and Communication: We explain everything we're doing and why. Teens appreciate being treated with respect and having their questions answered honestly.

Control: We give teens as much control as possible. They can raise a hand to pause anytime they need a break.

Technology Distractions: Headphones with music or audiobooks can help anxious teens relax during procedures.

Gradual Exposure: For severe anxiety, we may recommend a series of short, positive visits to build comfort before any treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend dental checkups and cleanings every six months for children and teens of all ages. Regular visits allow us to catch problems early, reinforce good habits, and keep young smiles healthy. Some children with higher cavity risk or orthodontic needs may benefit from more frequent visits.

We have extensive experience helping anxious children. Our gentle approach, child-friendly communication, and patience help most fearful children become comfortable over time. We use distraction techniques, tell-show-do methods, and positive reinforcement to build trust. In rare cases of severe dental anxiety, we may refer to a pediatric dental specialist.

Yes. We use digital X-rays, which emit 80% less radiation than traditional film X-rays—and the radiation exposure is minimal to begin with. We follow the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) and only take X-rays when necessary for proper diagnosis. Lead aprons with thyroid collars provide additional protection.

Unlike permanent teeth, baby teeth should NOT be replanted if knocked out, as this can damage the developing permanent tooth beneath. Clean the area gently, control any bleeding with gauze, and call us for guidance. We'll want to examine your child to ensure no damage to other teeth or the permanent tooth bud.
